The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs in Barbados has issued a voluntary recall for some Jif brand peanut butter products, due to potential salmonella contamination.
The move follows a notice from the manufacturer J.M. Smucker Company, which stated the recalled peanut butter had been distributed across the United States in retail stores and other outlets.
The recalled products have lot code numbers 1274425 through 2140425, which can be found alongside the “best-if-used-by date”.
The statement said:
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, while healthy people often experience fever, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Barbadians are advised the affected products should be returned to the place of purchase, and the department of commerce and consumer affairs is recommending a refund be given to the consumer.
Consumers in Barbados who have the affected products are also asked to inform the department.
