The Barbados Association of Retired Persons is calling for the introduction of policies and programmes to improve the plight of elderly women in society.
BARP President Marilyn Rice-Bowen is making the call as the world observes International Day of Older Persons, today October 1st.
The theme this year is “The Resilience and Contributions of Older Women”.
Ms. Rice-Bowen says many of our older women were never major income earners, were in some cases the sole provider for large families, and performed many roles including dressmaker, baker and farmer to ensure their family’s survival.
She says some older women are also unpaid caregivers, often times not by choice.
