People found guilty of committing more than one crime using an illegal firearm could soon be facing the possibility of life in prison.
This is among changes proposed with the Firearms (Amendment) Bill, 2022 introduced in the House of Assembly by Attorney General Dale Marshall today, which he hopes will send a signal to the criminal element.
Under the proposed Bill, an individual found guilty of a first offence, will face a possibility of between 10 and 20 years in prison.
Subsequent offences would attract no fewer than 20 years imprisonment.
Mr. Marshall explained there will be some instances when the judge can use his discretion and impose a lesser sentence.
They include if the individual was under 18 at the time of the offence and if they have not been previously convicted of an indictable offence of a violent nature.
Mr. Marshall also revealed that prison sentences imposed under the Act must be served consecutively to any other sentence to which the individual is subject to at the time.
