EBC: no reports or evidence of identity theft

The Electoral and Boundaries Commission says it has no reports and no evidence of any theft of the identities of Barbadians.

The EBC also says its investigations have revealed there have been no reports before the Anti-fraud Committee of the Bankers Association of Barbados and the Central Bank of Barbados about identity theft from credit cards.

The Electoral and Boundaries Commission and Electoral Department have been reacting to what they describe as misinformation on social media about data breaches regarding the electronic publication of the Register of Electors.

In a statement, the Department has singled out comments about Nigerians and other fraudsters employing the “leaked Barbados Electoral List” to perpetrate identity theft and fraud across the world.

The Department says with reference to what has been termed a major data breach, legislation imposes an obligation on the EBC to yearly publish a Register of Electors.
