Independence of electoral commissions questioned

A university academic has called into question the independence of electoral and boundaries commissions in the Caribbean.

Professor of Constitutional Governance and Politics at the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill, Cynthia Barrow-Giles says these entities are technically political or partisan institutions.

She was at the time responding to a question after delivering a professional lecture titled “Constitutional Reform in the Commonwealth Caribbean” organised by the School of Graduate Studies and Research of the UWI.

Professor Barrow-Giles also spoke out against what she labels the “group think” culture as people are not allowed to make comments that politicians and those in authority do not appreciate.
