Flash Flood Warning in effect for south-western areas

A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for south-western parishes of Barbados.

A Flash Flood Warning is issued when rapid flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) is occurring or is imminent in the warning area.

The Met Office notes maximum rainfall accumulations of 15.0 to 25.0 mm in moderate to heavy showers with isolated higher amounts of 50.0 to 75.0mm are likely in south-western districts of the island.

The public is advised that the following impacts may occur:

*Strong runoff from higher elevations

*Soil erosion is likely on bared or scarred land surfaces

*Debris such as small rocks, mud, and tree foliage could end up on roads and property

*Increased water levels of existing water bodies (e.g ponds etc.)

* Traffic delays are likely

*Flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads is possible.

This alert is in effect until 6:00 p.m. but will be terminated sooner if conditions warrant.
