April 26, 2024

CMC – A 64-year-old British national has been taken to the Scarborough General Hospital, after being attacked by a bull shark on Friday morning, the Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), Farley Augustine has said.

He said that the visitor, Peter Smith, is “receiving critical care” at the hospital and that he had “his left hand severed from elbow down, left thigh severed and laceration to stomach”.

Augustine, in a post on his Facebook page said that the attack has forced the temporary closure of the Turtle Beach at Courland Bay.

Augustine said he had already been in touch with the British High Commission regarding the incident that occurred at 9:15 a.m. (local time) 10 metres away from the shore.

He gave the size of the shark as 8 to 10 ft in length and two ft in width and that the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard has been since been notified “and is monitoring the area”.
