More embracing African heritage

More Barbadians are embracing their African heritage, especially during the Season of Emancipation.

They are doing so through their hair and attire.

Senior Cultural Policy and Research Officer in the Division of Culture, Dr. Sharon Johnson says Barbadian designers have been creative with their designs and the use of African fabrics.

The Division of Culture this Season of Emancipation is encouraging citizens to become more aware of the African continent and its cultural heritage.

With Africa Day drawing near, two virtual competitions – the Africa Day Best Dress and Design Competition and Africa Day Our Hairitage Hair Competition aimed at celebrating diversity and cultural heritage are being organized.

Dr. Johnson revealed on Mornin’ Barbados the competitions are open to all Barbadian males and females.

Senator John King says the Season of Emancipation is a time to break the mental shackles planted on people of African descent.

He is encouraging Barbadians to participate in the season.
