PAHO: Step up fight against chikungunya

With Barbados and the region being put on notice for sporadic outbreaks of chikungunya in the Caribbean, an official of the Pan American Health Organisation wants the country to maintain vigilance and step up mosquito prevention and control.

PAHO in a recent epidemiological alert, warned about the increase in cases and deaths from chikungunya in the region of the Americas.

During the first eight epidemiological weeks of 2023, 115,539 cases and 33 deaths due to chikungunya were reported.

The highest incidence rates were observed in Paraguay.

Advisor, Health Surveillance and Disease Prevention and Control, Dr. Probhjot Singh reminds the public there are no vaccines available.

He was a guest on CBC TV8’s Morning Report.
