Barbados and the region have been advised to prepare their health systems to address the long-term impact of the condition, commonly known as Long COVID.
Director of the Pan American Health Organisation Dr. Carissa Etienne raised the issue in her latest press briefing.
She says estimates suggest 10 to 20 percent of people who have had COVID-19 may go on to experience symptoms.
These include persistent and severe fatigue, shortness of breath and mental health issues.
She stresses it’s crucial countries recognize the impact Long COVID has on people’s lives and work.
