Deanne Phillips cannot be stopped – not even by a debilitating condition that has caused her to lose countless time being bound to hospital beds.
She is one of the everyday women overcoming major challenges CBC News is highlighting from today, International Women’s Day and during March which is recognised as Women’s History Month in some parts of the world.
That condition, Myasthenia Gravis (MG), is an autoimmune disorder which results in weakness in the skeletal muscles, leaving sufferings like Deanne with excruciating pain and severe fatigue.
If you met her you would not imagine the challenges this 30-year-old triumphs over daily, as she is not only on the path to a successful career but is also pursuing studies at the University of the West Indies. Deanne hopes her example and that of many people who are part of the disability community in Barbados, would encourage others to see that their conditions do not stop them from making valuable contributions to society.
In fact, she stressed that while people with autoimmune conditions in particular may have to take time off from work, they usually strive to offer such high quality service that this should not be held against them:
The quality of the calibre of work that we would give it would be worth it to have us as an asset in your organisation.
She hopes to see more women with disabilities in Barbados given the chance to prove this.
