Man fined nearly $50 million on drug charges

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC- A magistrate has slapped a four-year jail term and a fine of GUY$49.6 million (One Guyana dollar=US$0.004 cents) on a 39-year-old man after he pleaded guilty to be in possession of more than 55 kilogrammes of cannabis in his possession.

Latchman Sankar was one of two people arrested by officials of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) during an operation earlier this week.

The authorities had also arrested 36-year-old Sanya Ramrattan, alias, a Shena, of the Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara on Monday after the drugs were found at a property on the East Bank, Demerara.

Sankar,  also known as ‘Jack’ appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul with the court being informed that the cannabis was found in several large bags containing several brick-like parcels.

CANU said that the drugs had a street value of approximately GUY$20 million.

Ramrattan was released without being charged.
