March 26, 2024

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – The Belize Police Department (BPD) says it is “working diligently to investigate this senseless act of violence” after a 29-year-old policeman was shot and killed over the last weekend.

In a statement, the BPD said police constable Dylan Anthony “served with honour and distinction in his duties to protect and serve the community’ and that it is working to “bring those responsible to justice”.

Media reports said that the police officer was on his way home when he was ambushed by a gunman on the Roaring Creek Bridge, situated in a small village in the Cayo District of Belize, just north-west of Belmopan.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Hilberto Romero, told a news conference that Anthony’s murder is connected to a shooting incident that occurred last Friday night in the Roaring Creek village.

Police said that on Friday night, two men on a motorcycle drove up to a group of individuals that were socializing in a yard and opened fire in their direction.

“An investigation is being carried out into this report. We have several people in custody and are seeking other persons as well this time,” ACP Romero told reporters, adding that “the intelligence we are gathering is that it is a case of mistaken identity.

“But the person that was on the bridge firing the shots, he targeted the police officer who was on that motorcycle,” he said, adding that he would not disclose whether one of those assisting the investigations had recently been released from prison.

“I will not give the names of the persons detained at this time. We have several persons who we are looking for.,” he said, adding “that is a persons we are looking for yes.”
