April 3, 2024

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the discovery of the bodies of two men at a settlement near a landfill north of Castries late Tuesday.

In a statement, the police said that one of the bodies has been identified as Brinatto Stephen, the son of Rufus Stephen, alias ‘Brico’, who was killed last year in Vieux Fort, south of here.

Last year, the authorities were forced to close schools in Vieux Fort following an upsurge in violence and murder.

The island was forced to seek assistance from the Barbados-based Regional Security System (RSS) in implementing 24-hour police patrols, among measures in response to the deadly gun violence.

Meantime, police are are yet to identify the second victim following the discovery of the  bodies with gunshot injuries at Deglos.

Media reports said members of the public found one of the bodies and alerted the police, who discovered the other deceased while combing the scene.

The murders come as St. Lucia is hosting more than 200 military and police officials for the RSS’s Unity Exercise 2024 (UNEX 24) until April 13. UNEX 24 aims to improve mechanisms for regional cooperation within the RSS in response to security issues.

The authorities said that regional and international participants will engage in diverse military exercises, including land-based maneuvers and sea operations.
