PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Trinidad and Tobago police Monday said they had beefed up security around a school in southern Trinidad after the principal received an email threatening to shoot students this week.
In a statement, the police said that around 1.13 pm (Local time) email address “where the principal …was made aware of an intended threat, namely to shoot students entering the schools compound on the 15.4.24 and or the 16.4.24.”
The statement said that a report was made to the Barrackpore police station and that a copy of the email initially sent was sent together with a report to the Cyber crime unit.
The police said that security has since been beefed up and that they will be monitoring the situation on the two days.
The Trinidad and Tobago United Teachers Association (TTUTA) said that teachers and students stayed away from classes on Monday.
TTUTA president, Martin Lum Kin, also confirmed that emails threatening to shoot and kill students and educators at the school either Monday or Tuesday were sent to the school’s official email address and two teachers of the school.
“TTUTA shudders to think if this threat was carried out and the loss of lives, even one loss of life is one too many losses. An ounce of prevention is greater than a pound of cure,” he said, condening the threats describing them as an act of terrorism and treason.
He said despite the unease expressed by the school’s administration and parents, the Ministry of Education decided against closing the school.
The ministry has so far not yet commented on the threats.
