In France, a monkeypox case appears to have spread from humans to a dog.

This is believed to be the first human to dog transmission of the virus.

According to a case published in the Lancet Medical Journal – two men who live in the same household contracted monkeypox.

About two weeks later, the couple’s dog – a four year old Italian Greyhound – started to show symptoms, including lesions on its abdomen.

The dog was tested by researchers at the Sorbonne University and was found to be positive.

The couple say the dog slept in the same bed with them.

Researchers say their findings should prompt debate on the need to isolate pets from monkeypox positive individuals.

Around 1,700 people in France have been infected with monkeypox.
