A US Coast Guard search is ongoing for 39 people whose boat reportedly capsized on Saturday night near Fort Pierce, Florida.
The Coast Guard Miami Sector says around 8:00 a.m. today, it received a report from a good Samaritan who said he rescued a man clinging to a capsized vessel.
The Coast Guard says they suspect this was a human smuggling venture.
The rescued individual told authorities he had left Bimini, Bahamas, with 39 others on Saturday night. They encountered severe weather which caused the boat to capsize.
According to the survivor, no one on board the vessel was wearing a life jacket.
As of now, the Coast Guard is the only agency engaged in the rescue effort, which is focused on an area 45 miles east of the Fort Pierce Inlet down to Bimini, Bahamas.
