Ireland have qualified for the super-12 stage of the T20 World Cup and eliminated two-time champions West Indies after a thumping nine-wicket win in Hobart this morning.

It means the Irish are into the second round for the first time since 2009, with West Indies – winners of this tournament in 2012 and 2016 – subjected to a first-round exit after the crushing defeat.

Paul Stirling’s unbeaten 66 and skipper Andrew Balbirnie’s 37, pumped an opening stand of 73, as Ireland eased to a target of 147 with 15 deliveries to spare.

Earlier, Gareth Delany took three for 16 as West Indies were restricted to 146 for five, with only Brandon King on 62 playing a sustained innings.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s win over Scotland in today’s other game, means Ireland finished second in group ‘B’ and will now face England, Australia, New Zealand, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka in the super-12.
