Minister of Energy and Business Development, Senator Lisa Cummins says amendments to the Transport Authority Bill will see the Transport Authority being able to take action on all permits despite the issuing authority.
She says this is meant to address a number of challenges currently faced.
Changes to sections 4 and 23 of the legislation make provision for the Transport Authority to be the entity responsible for issuing, suspending and cancelling the licences, permits and badges of drivers and conductors of PSVs, motor omnibuses, minibuses and route taxis.
Currently, the regulatory body issues the permit approval letters authorising vehicles to be used as PSVs while the permits are issued by the Barbados Licensing Authority.
Senator Cummins says Government’s vision for the public sector is one fit for all to use.
She says the culture that has developed relating to the PSV sector over time has created an us-vs-them situation.
Senator Cummins says common courtesies expected by drivers don’t exist like before as she pointed a finger at private vehicles for some of the indiscipline on nation’s roads.
