Barbados and Canada hold talks on developments in Haiti

May 2, 2024

Developments in Haiti were among the main topics of discussion during talks between Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and her Canadian counterpart, Justin Trudeau.

During their deliberations, the two leaders discussed the ongoing political, security, and humanitarian crisis there.

In a statement, the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada says Prime Ministers Mottley and Trudeau welcomed the establishment of the new Transitional Presidential Council.

They expressed hope this development will pave the way for the restoration of democratic order in Haiti, facilitate the deployment of the UN multinational security support mission and bring long-term stability to the CARICOM state.

Prime Minister Trudeau also recognised the role of Barbados and its fellow CARICOM member states in supporting these efforts by fostering inclusive political dialogue to advance Haitian-led solutions.

It was reported the two leaders have agreed to remain in close contact as the situation in Haiti continues to evolve.
