Barbados & Canada partner to address challenges faced by small island states

January 29th, 2022

Barbados has a partner in Canada as the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by small island states.

That’s according to the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada, which says Justin Trudeau is looking forward to finding opportunities to work with Barbados on urgent issues, such as fighting climate change, advancing gender equality, and strengthening education.

The statement came after Mr. Trudeau spoke with Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, offering his congratulations on her re-election.

Both leaders acknowledged that without access to concessional financing, many countries will not be able to invest adequately in their own development.

The two leaders discussed the need to engage key actors, such as international financial institutions and the private sector, in any efforts to mobilize development financing with a view to building a fairer, safer, and more inclusive post-pandemic world for everyone.
