Barbados encouraged to join ICJ case against Israel

May 14, 2024

Barbados has been encouraged to join the case filed by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

In December 2023, South Africa filed an application initiating judicial proceedings against Israel for violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention.

The application sought provisional measures to safeguard Palestinian rights under the Convention and ensure Israel’s compliance therewith.

Secretary of the Caribbean Against Apartheid in Palestine, Lalu Hanuman says it’s important Barbados give support to the Palestinian struggle.

He was a guest on CBC TV8’s Mornin’ Barbados.

With Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica now recognising the state of Palestine, all independent members of CARICOM now do so.

Treasurer of the organisation, Suleiman Bulbulia welcomes the move, noting it’s an act of solidarity with the Palestinians despite their homeland being under occupation.

He says Barbadians need to be sensitised about what’s going on as many don’t understand the full nature of the conflict.
