Barbados eyeing another World Heritage inscription

April 16, 2024

Moved by a desire to keep Bajan culture alive and the preservation of the Barbados Landship, Barbados is eyeing another World Heritage inscription.

The country is seeking to have the Landship programme nominated for inscription on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of urgent safeguarding.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with Responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight says the Division of Culture is lobbying for the inscription.

Ms. Munro-Knight’s comments came during the graduation ceremony for the first cohort of the Barbados Landship Certification Course.

The course, developed in collaboration with the Faculty of Culture, Creative and Performing Arts at the University of the West Indies and the National Cultural Foundation, was designed to equip participants with the experience, knowledge and material required for certification as an NCF and Barbados Landship Association approved leader and teacher.

Minister Munro-Knight says an ecosystem of support for the Barbados Landship is required.
