Barbados signs air services agreement with Qatar

October 1st, 2022

Barbados has signed an air services agreement with the government of Qatar.

Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Senator Lisa Cummins, formalised the agreement while attending the International Civil Aviation Organization’s 41st General Assembly, which took place in Montreal, Canada.

She said the signing of the air services agreement, along with a joint Memorandum of Cooperation, would allow Barbados and Qatar to begin discussions on commercial carriers flying to the island.

The Minister, who has responsibility for the Civil Aviation Department, also noted that Qatar has agreed to support Barbados in capacity building for the creation of a new Civil Aviation Authority.

This would include the training of Barbadian nationals and the provision of scholarships in the area of aviation.

According to Senator Cummins, for the first time in Barbados’ history a Civil Aviation Authority Bill would be laid in Parliament in the coming weeks.

Once passed, it will have with it two additional items of legislation, on air navigation services and accident investigation services.
