Barbados has signalled it stands with Guyana in its border dispute with Venezuela and on the side of international law.

Permanent Representative to the OAS Ambassador Noel Lynch, stated the island’s position during an Extraordinary Special Session of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States.

It was convened at the request of the government of Guyana to provide an update on the border controversy with Venezuela.

Several members of CARICOM along with the United States reiterated their unwavering and unequivocal support for Guyana.

Ambassador Lynch says there’s a longstanding tradition of solidarity within CARICOM.

Guyana’s Prime Minister Mark Philips, in his address, highlighted Venezuela’s claim to its Essequibo region is not only a threat to its sovereignty but its ability to protect its people and develop its resources.

He says Guyana is vigilant with the intentions and the implications of the planned Venezuelan referendum.

He says Venezuela’s actions may be geared towards abandoning the proceedings at the International Court of Justice, and to resort to its own measures to settle the controversy.
