Be vigilant about advances in technology

April 11, 2024

A cybersecurity expert is urging Barbadians to be more alert to the advances in technology as they go about their daily lives.

Amidst complaints over social media that chip and PIN cards were being swiped from at least a two-foot distance away from card machines.

Managing Director of CARISEC Global Inc. Edward Millington, says it is best to create a culture of security and use radio frequency identification or RFID sleeves or wallets, in an effort to protect users.

However, Vice President of the Barbados Bankers Association, Shimon McIntosh says the chip and PIN technology is the most effective against skimming as card data is encrypted.

Mr. McIntosh added that while a chip cannot be cloned using a reader as each tap carries a unique signature, an RFID wallet can assist with avoiding accidental taps.
