BUT calling for attention to ‘sick building’

November, 28, 2023

The Barbados Union of Teachers is calling attention to environmental challenges affecting a number of schools.

First Vice President and Chairman of the Health and Safety Committee Julian Pierre, says some of these issues have been ongoing for over 10 years.

Among the institutions identified, the Lester Vaughan School, The Ann Hill School and St. John Primary.

He says BUT officials have visited the institutions, stressing it’s clear something is wrong.

Mr. Pierre maintains it’s the responsibility of the employer to provide a healthy and safe working environment.

The BUT is questioning why recommendations made for addressing the environmental problems at the St. John Primary School have not been addressed.

It says other schools have also had reports done with no follow-up or action.

Teachers at St. John Primary took action in protest of the environmental conditions.
