BWU wants meeting with employers

July 26, 2023

The Barbados Workers Union will be seeking a meeting with two private sector bodies in a bid to get businesses to do right by their workers.

During a press conference, BWU General Secretary Toni Moore, revealed recent acts of industrial action were taken only after years of negotiations with no resolution.

She says while the recent increase in industrial action is not the approach the Union prefers, she’s warned it will call out workers if it needs to, as she accused some employers of not wanting to provide basic standards for workers.

To that end, she says the BWU has written to the Barbados Employers Confederation and the Barbados Private Sector Association seeking a meeting on the matter.

Meanwhile Deputy General Secretary and Director of Industrial Relations, Dwaine Paul, has warned of possible industrial action within the hotel sector, if the treatment of workers does not improve.

Making reference to the upcoming winter tourist season which gets underway in November, he’s hinted that hoteliers have until then to address the concerns.
