The Barbados Nurses Association is calling for the installation of metal detectors at all of the island’s polyclinics and health facilities, as well as increased security personnel and surveillance cameras.
It comes in the wake of a recent incident of violence where it says a nurse at the St. Philip Polyclinic in Six Roads was threatened by a patient with a knife.
In condemning the incident, President Dr. Fay Parris says it’s unacceptable and intolerable and puts the lives of patients and healthcare professionals at risk.
The Government has been asked by the Barbados Nurses Association to take immediate and effective measures and provide adequate mental health support.
She stressed violence and harassment in the workplace is a human rights violation that not only affects the dignity, health and safety of workers but undermines the quality of healthcare services.
