Call for more cooperation between diaspora and Africa

May 10, 2024

Liberia’s first female President has been underscoring the importance of countries in the diaspora like Barbados reconnecting with Africa.

Her Excellency Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is in Barbados as part of the historic Sankofa Pilgrimage, which has brought hundreds of Liberians to the island.

Last night, she participated in a Fireside Chat where she recounted her journey to the presidency in 2006, and being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2011.

Ms. Johnson-Sirleaf believes reconnecting with the diaspora is very important.

She says she is most impressed by the Barbadian people’s enthusiasm during her visit.

She has also commended Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley’s Bridgetown Initiative which seeks to reform the global financial system.

Prime Minister Mottley, who was in the audience, gifted the guest of honour with a piece of artwork.

Ms. Mottley says the former President’s role in rebuilding Liberia after the civil war and dealing with the consequences of the Rwandan genocide, cannot be taken for granted.
