Caribbean needs better travel infrastructure

November 1, 2023

Barbados and the region have heard from Guyana that through greater awareness of the economic potential of trade between the Caribbean and Africa, the case for more effective air travel links will present itself.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ashni Singh, says the issue was one that featured in discussions at the just concluded AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum in Georgetown.

Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley represented the country at the forum.

While in Guyana, Ms. Mottley along with St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip Pierre, were taken by host President Dr. Irfaan Ali to visit two transformational agricultural projects at the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute in Mon Repos on the east coast of Demerara.

They toured a large hydroponic facility, onion farm and shade houses where high-value crops such as kale and chillies are being produced.

The leaders were apprised of the performance and efficiency of the projects by the technical officials on the ground.

Guyana is leading CARICOM’s drive to increase its food security and reduce its food import bill by 25% by 2025.
