March 13, 2024

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) is highlighting the need for Barbados and the region to increase resilience in schools given the ever-present threats.

Executive Director Elizabeth Riley says the Caribbean is uniquely vulnerable to a myriad of natural and man-made hazards.

She says schools are on the front line of these threats.

However, she told a Caribbean Safe School Initiative Virtual Pre-Ministerial Forum countries shouldn’t be daunted.

Chair of the Council of Ministers of CDEMA and Minister of Education in St. Lucia, Shawn Edward stressed countries in an area marked by escalating climate impacts and natural disasters, must fortify communities, infrastructure and institutions to withstand and recover from adversity.

He says schools are not only educational institutions as their resilience is crucial to the overall wellbeing of Caribbean communities.
