The Alliance Owners Of Public Transport (AOPT) is tonight suggesting that Barbados transitions from fixed to distance-based transportation fares.
This suggestion from Chairman of the AOPT, Roy Raphael. While referring to rising fuel costs and decreasing ridership on public service vehicles, Mr Raphael says the current fixed fare of $3.50 has become unprofitable for many owners and operators.
The COVID-19 pandemic dealt the transportation sector a severe blow and Mr Raphael believes the sector’s recovery continues to be stifled as more Barbadians purchase vehicles.
