Co-op movement keen on investment in productive sectors

The Barbados Sustainable Energy Cooperative Society Limited – CoopEnergy – has been in advanced discussions with various Government and industry officials.

It’s all in an effort to establish financial, administrative and management arrangements for the possible transfer of some significant state-owned businesses over to co-operative and workers’ ownership.

This initiative represents a watershed opportunity for the enfranchisement and empowerment of ordinary citizens of Barbados with respect to the ownership and control of key national resources.

Spokesman for the CoopEnergy Lieutenant Colonel Trevor Browne told the Morning Report the co-op movement has reached a stage in its development where it has mastered the financial market and is interested in investing in the productive sectors of Barbados.

Among the entities CoopEnergy has shown interest in is the Barbados Agricultural Management Company.

Lieutenant Colonel Browne says Government’s divestment efforts are ongoing.
