Debate on Constitution Bill

September 28th, 2021

Barbados has moved one step closer to becoming a Republic, with the House of Assembly debating the Constitution Amendment Bill 2021.

Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley led off Debate on the Bill, telling members it has four main purposes and is simply about making a Barbadian the Head of State.

She says there’s a committee to oversee the process, adding there’s no secret plan relating to the island becoming a Parliamentary Republic.

Prime Minister Mottley says the next step in the process is for the formal nomination and swearing in of the island’s first President.

She says Opposition Leader, Bishop Joseph Atherley has agreed to a joint nomination of current Governor General, Dame Sandra Mason for the post.

According to her, all that’s left is for the two Houses of Parliament to formally confirm the nomination.
