‘Dysfunction in international institutions’

January 16, 2024

Barbados Ambassador to CARICOM, David Comissiong says recent comments made by the island’s Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley labelling Israel’s war against Hamas in the Palestinian territory of Gaza as the world’s first televised genocide has resonated with many across the globe.

He says CARICOM has made its position known as it abhorred the attacks in Israel and the counterattacks in Gaza.

Ambassador Comissiong says the case brought by South Africa before the International Court of Justice formally accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza is a landmark one.

He notes despite requests, Israel has not heeded calls to adhere to international humanitarian law.

He says the situation in Gaza is creating a crisis of confidence in the international institutions.

Ambassador Comissiong was a guest on the Conversations on CARICOM segment of CBC TV8’s Mornin’ Barbados.

Ambassador Comissiong acknowledged the action taken by Belize which suspended ties with Israel and St. Vincent and The Grenadines for voicing its support of South Africa’s genocide case.

He suggests there should be penalties for not adhering to resolutions of the UN General Assembly.
