Barbados is onboard with the global campaign this World No Tobacco Day and is placing attention on the youth who are being targeted by tobacco companies.
Substance Abuse Prevention Officer with the National Council on Substance Abuse, Paulavette Atkinson says they’ve been working with law enforcement, ensuring the laws are adhered to in a bid to safeguard minors.
She wants parents to be alert and keep abreast of the new devices outside of cigarettes that are attractive to children.
Ms. Atkinson was a guest on CBC TV8s Mornin’ Barbados.
The theme from World No Tobacco Day is “We Need Food, Not Tobacco”.
The 2023 global campaign aims to raise awareness about alternative crop production and marketing opportunities for tobacco farmers and encourage them to grow sustainable, nutritious crops.
Ms. Atkinson is confident their prevention messages are getting through to Barbadians.
