GAIA workers vent about grievances

July 27, 2023

Workers from several departments at the Grantley Adams International Airport gathered outside the Arrivals Hall today to vent about a number of grievances.

Those present included employees from the Engineering, Security and Custodial departments.

Unity Workers Union Shop Steward Alvin Hall told CBC News it was not intended to be a work stoppage but a media briefing to make the public aware that the workers are unhappy about a number of issues.

These include promotion and disciplinary processes, the awarding of contracts, environmental challenges and rostering.

Mr. Hall added that the recently announced public-private sector partnership for the management of the Airport has also caused some concern and members of the Union want their representative fully briefed about the proposed deal.

He warns today’s protest could be escalated if their requests are not met.

Efforts to get a comment from the management of the Airport have so far been unsuccessful.
