Increased fish silage production could save millions

May 24, 2023

Barbados could save millions of dollars in imports each year, if it can scale up the production and use of fish silage.

The potential benefits were tested during a project, funded through a $170,000 investment from the Food and Agriculture Organisation.

It involved transforming fish waste into animal feed.

Representative of the FAO, Juan Cheaz, revealed it’s a potential area for growth, as less than one percent of the fish silage is currently used.

Mr. Cheaz was speaking during a completion workshop for participants of the project.

Minister of Environment and National Beautification Adrian Forde, says he’s requested further assistance from the FAO to procure equipment to increase the production of fish silage locally.

According to him, this not only has the potential to create new jobs, but it also helps reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill.
