Intervenor warns of rate increases

April 14th, 2022

Experts in the energy sector have warned that while the 22% increase in light bills recently announced by the Barbados Light and Power Company is a bitter pill to swallow, the rate hikes which may result from the upcoming rate review, should be a bigger concern for Barbadians.

In response to the statement from the BL&P about the rate increase being caused by the oil crisis, prominent attorney-at-law, Tricia Watson, who is one of the intervenors in the upcoming rate review, said the rise in fuel costs being passed to the BL&P’s customers is not surprising.

However, she added that an application for a rate increase, given all of the circumstances, is what should surprise consumers.

In her application to intervene, she has asked the FTC to deny the power company’s request for higher rates.

Watson is one of eight intervenors the Fair Trading Commission has approved to participate in the upcoming rate hearing.
