A new cross-party UK coalition has been formed to mobilise support for the Bridgetown Initiative.
The coalition is made up of British Parliamentarians, campaigners, civil society groups and charities.
A meeting of 50 key players, from the UK and the United States, organised by MP Liam Byrne and the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development met at the House of Commons to galvanise support for the Initiative introduced by Barbados’ Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley and plan their next steps.
Mr. Byrne – the Chair of the Global Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF – says the world now faces multiple crises and unless the scale of green development finance is transformed from billions of dollars to trillions, countries are going to miss the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris climate targets.
The next steps include a cross-party sponsored debate in Parliament ahead of a major development summit in France in June.
The Bridgetown Initiative proposes to reform the world of development finance, particularly how rich countries help poor countries cope with and adapt to climate change.
