More funding needed to protect reefs

The local private sector is now risk averse to investing in the blue economy and is waiting to see how Government will act.

This assertion from Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy Kirk Humphrey.

He was speaking at the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development Event, held under the theme ‘The Science We Need for the Ocean We Want’.

Minister Humphrey believes the Caribbean is not seeing the funding necessary to protect the reefs and the communities which depend on them.

Minister Humphrey says we are looking to the ocean as a place of hope as we seek to feed more people.

However, he says if the ocean could speak, it would ask questions about how we treat it.
