Professor Avinash Persaud, Climate Envoy for Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has warned countries currently not deemed as climate vulnerable, could very well see themselves being classified as such in the future, if the world does not change.
Professor Persaud gave the stark warning as he participated in Island Finance Forum 2023.
The forum was held under the theme, “Investment for Sustainable Development”.
Professor Persaud, in adding up the populations of all the Small Island Developing States, notes these SIDS are still classified as small, representing about one percent of the global population.
He says SIDS have had to partner with other countries, sharing similar challenges.
As efforts continue to promote the Bridgetown Initiative, Professor Persaud sees the need for a climate vulnerability index.
