Need for ‘culture of safety’

October 12, 2023

A top emergency management official is stressing the importance of training and volunteers in the process of disaster preparedness mitigation.

Word of this from the Director of the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), Kerry Hinds.

She says it is incumbent that all Barbadians know the business of disaster management to foster a culture of safety.

Ms. Hinds made the remarks today during a DEM officer certificate presentation ceremony for shelter management training for over two dozen volunteers at the DEM headquarters in Warrens, St. Michael. She lauded the efforts of those volunteering in the risk management field.

Disaster Risk Management Officer for Barbados, Tamara Lovell of the USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, says shelter management training has allowed officials in Barbados to build capacity against potentially disastrous situations.
