New Health Minister to focus on nurses shortage and other urgent issues

November 5th, 2022

The new Health Minister is on the job and has revealed plans to address the concerns facing health care in Barbados, chief among them, the nurses shortage and issues facing these health care professionals.

Senator Dr. the Honourable Jerome Walcott spoke to Shane Sealy on the sidelines of the pinning and recognition ceremony for nurses graduating from the Post Graduate Diploma in Paediatric Nursing and the Masters of Science Nursing programmes.

This is the first cohort of nurses to graduate from the UWI Cave Hill Nursing programme, a partnership with the Shaw Centre for Paediatric Excellence.

Dr. Walcott says this is the beginning of an overall plan to offer better opportunities for nurses to be trained in specialty areas, to meet local, regional and international demand.

The Health Minister has also outlined plans to improve conditions and salary for trained nurses.

He says the stipend for student nurses will be reintroduced.

It’s one of the urgent issues Dr. Walcott intends to address as he prepares to meet with the Barbados Nurses Association.
