There was discussion about a proposal to amend the country’s water protected zones, during Monday’s debate on the Appropriation Bill 2022.
Under the new proposal which has already been agreed to by Cabinet, Zones One to Five would be replaced with Zones A to E.
The changes are expected to allow people in multiple parishes to develop their lands and access indoor plumbing in some cases for the first time.
However, Technical Advisor to the Barbados Water Authority, Dr John Mwansa has explained that in order to protect the country’s aquifers there will still be a need to manage what is done on the surface.
