There has been no official report made to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade regarding an allegation of fishermen from Barbados plying their trade in the seas off Tobago.
That is the information reaching CBC News after Tobago fisherfolk expressed concern over the presence of Barbadian fishermen, who the All Tobago Fisherfolk Association (AFTA) claims are overfishing in Tobago waters.
AFTA president Curtis Douglas declared enough is enough, noting the organisation intends to write to Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley to deal with the problem.
He says AFTA will be sending letters to all concerned since the overfishing by Barbadians is causing fish processors in Tobago to go out of business and the employees sent home.
According to him, the fish population increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, however, fleets of Bajan vessels have been operating illegally in Tobago’s waters for the last year.
