The National Union of Public Workers is seeking an urgent meeting with the Ministry of Public Service about changes to the terms and conditions of service for watchmen.
The NUPW says it has been bombarded with calls from watchmen in the public sector and state-owned enterprises in recent times, about the move which would see their gross pay being reduced.
The Union says it’s aware of a circular in which the Ministry has sought to increase the hourly rate of watchmen, as a result of an established national minimum wage.
The NUPW is however charging that while the hourly rate has increased, the overall hours they work have been reduced.
The Union says watchmen usually work a 12 hour period, 6 to 7 times a week, and any variation in this should be negotiated with the NUPW.
The NUPW has therefore requested that the Ministry of Public Service direct all ministries, departments and state-owned enterprises to put a hold on the policy pending a satisfactory resolution.
