Barbados has seen a uptick in COVID-19 cases in the last month and while the numbers are not high, the Health Ministry is monitoring the situation closely.

Senior Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Arthur Phillips says the co-metrics or indicators being used to measure the presence of the viral illness in the population have all been trending up.

Over the last week and a half alone, new COVID-19 cases discovered by the Best-dos Santos Public Health Lab moved from 67 on March 20th to 228 on March 28th.

During a COVID-19 press conference this morning Dr. Phillips noted this situation could be a result of a number of factors, including more contact among Barbadians or changes in the type of infection that is present.

He says while the Omicron variant has been confirmed in Barbados, its sub-variant, BA.2 is present in the island’s main tourism source markets and samples from tests done here on island have been sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency or CARPHA for further screening.
