Talk rather than hit…
That’s the mantra being pushed to parents by Clinical Psychologist at the Child Care Board Josett Sam.
She says parents and caregivers should not see hitting children as a way of correcting their wayward behaviour.
In fact, she believes it is a reinforcer for violence.
Ms. Sam says society needs to get away from the flawed notion of “licks never killed anybody” and talk to children more as these are different times.
She charges that discipline is about using respectful and non-violent methods to teach children how to behave respectfully.
The Clinical Psychologist was speaking at the Child Care Board during a training seminar for foster parents, teaching them about the alternatives to corporal punishment.
Ms. Sam says any parent who beats stunts development and creates unnecessary anxieties.
